The food at Esalen reflects a deep bond with the land, a commitment to sustainable practices, and a daily collaboration between the kitchen and the farm and garden staff.

Year round, Esalen farmers harvest produce and herbs every morning to support the kitchen in preparing the most alive and rejuvenating food possible. The farm specializes in gourmet salad mixes, specialty herbs used for seasoning and teas, heirloom root crops, and a diverse variety of kale and lettuces.

Esalen uses about 3,200 eggs per week, which are sourced from Glaum Egg Ranch, an organic and cage-free family farm located 80 miles north of Esalen.

All the seafood served at Esalen adheres to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch guidelines.

We offer hormone-free dairy products as well as all-natural meats that are vegetarian-fed and raised humanely without antiboiotics or added growth hormones. Dairy-free, vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available at every meal.

We are happy to work with individual guests to accommodate those with allergies. Please disclose your allergies when you make your reservation and prior to your arrival. 

Breakfast is served in the Lodge daily from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. and includes:

  • Organic hot cereals
  • Local, cage-free eggs
  • Yogurt and house-made granola 
  • Variety of seasonal fruits
  • House-baked bread, nut butters, and organic preserves
  • Garden-grown fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens

Lunch and dinner are served in the Lodge daily. Lunch is 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.; dinner is 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Lunch and dinner include:

  • A variety of creative, wholesome entrees featuring flavors and culinary styles from around the world
  • A selection of freshly made soups
  • An extensive salad bar featuring fresh vegetables, protein options, and house-made salad dressings

Between Meals

Around the clock in the Lodge there is always coffee, tea, house-made bread for toast, preserves, nut butters, and fruit.

Growing Food: Our Approach

The Esalen Farm and Garden exists in a landscape of constant transition and transformation. In any given year we utilize many traditions and modes of farming: organic, biodynamic, permacultural, and bio-intensive. The farm is a true reflection of Esalen as a whole:  we wear our dogmas lightly, we go with the flow, we experiment, and we constantly evolve our practices.
